FAQ Lokk Work

What do I do if I have made the wrong base size?

If you have not yet locked off any dread sectioning, then simply start the line again. But if you have locked off the base and you are not happy with the base size, then you will need to GENTLY, unpick the dread weave. This can be very painful on a real person, so please try to be precise before locking off. Occasionally we get to an end of row and the dread section left is to small, in this case we will have to unpick the last dread base and add to the end. The more you practice the less this happens.

How do I work with hair that is silky and will not stay put in clips?

This can be very difficult, particularly if you have no one to hold hair whilst sectioning.  Different hair types, can present many different problems. Often we find people are using Silicone products, in there hair, prior to dreading. So always ask this question at the consult. Using Dry shampoo, and making sure you are using an accelerator when prepping hair, will help to tame that flyaway.

What should I do if my client is thinning in some areas on the scalp?

We always suggest you talk with your clients before dreading the hair, if you see signs of hair loss or pore scalp conditions. However, if your client is aware that they have a scalp or hair loss problem, but still insists on going ahead with the procedure, their are some tricks of the trade that will help.  Firstly, make sure they buy xfoliate or a product that will help strengthen and regrow the hair.   We use a method we like to call “Bulking”  This is taking a small amount of human hair, Often you can source this from hair cuts, you have done on the floor, or ask a hairdresser to save you some of the hair they have cut at the end of the day. (please look in trouble shooting on the SS page for bulking hair video)

How tight do i go at the base of the dread?

This is a difficult question to answer, as some clients will ask you to go very tight at the base. However, we do know that new hair growth or Anagen stage:

Is a very fragile state, and getting too close to the base, will in-fact break the hair shaft. You can often see this in the crochet method, where tiny broken bits of hair, remain around the base.

We suggest you tighten 2cm to 3cm away from the scalp this way you are not breaking the hair follicle and giving your client a more comfortable experience.

How far down the dread go if only base maintenance

We like to go about 6cm to 7cm down the dread, depending on how much loose hair they have at the base, this covers a base maintenance session.

How far do i dread down the length of the dread?

Description g It will depend on several things. Firstly does your client want long wispy ends? if so, you will dread and leave about 8 to 10cm of loose hair. If your client has curly ends, they might want to get rid of the curl, for this we need them to wait, at least 6months for the dread to mature and expand, and then you can do a Dread Burn. Or perhaps they prefer a razor cut or a blunt cut, this will be a personal choice and must all wait for the dread to mature, so that the end stays weaved and the dread does not fray. oes here

What do I do if the client is in lots of pain

The Sista System is designed to have limited amount of pain, though some people have very sensitive scalps and will need a looser base. It is a good idea to practice doing your bases on your mannequin without pulling, try pushing the dread in towards the head and then dreading, more difficult, but is much less painful for the client.

How close to scalp do I tighten base

We like to leave about 2cm to 3cm between the base and the start of the dread, for a tight base that will not break. If you client asks for loose bases then 5cm to 6cm is a good rule.

Im getting wrist pain from putting in dreads, what am i doing wrong?

Depending on the work, it could be many things.  Dread extension, attaching dreads can cause a lot of pain in the wrist area. I find synthetic the hardest on my wrists, but i do also notice the difference if I am stressed.

Try to make sure you only do one extension job a week, as day after day can cause a lot of fatigue. If it is happening with just general dread maintenance, you might want to revisit your technique.

Are you twisting your wrist when working?

    Are you stressed and ridged?

I find wearing a wrist support helps, as well as soothing rubs for muscle pain, after the job and if you are in pain during the install, put on your wrist support.

WHO CREATED THE COURSE/S?

The original Weirdsistas™ Nazy & Bonn opened their first ever dreadlock training school in Australia in 2007 and, in 2018 they upgraded their training packages to launch the the only online, module based, fully integrated dreadlock training platform in Australia- the “SistaSystem™ Dreadlock Training Academy” (free course).
The “Weirdsistas Pro Lokktician Course” (paid course) is the upgraded course, which was developed especially for professionals wanting to open their own dreadlocking business.

After 20+ years owning and operating multiple dreadlock studios in Australia, as well as running the SistaSystem™ dread school, in 2024 Nazy & Bonn retired from the dreadlock industry.
Their legacy was passed onto Sharna from VALHALLA HAIR with the intention of Sharna hosting these course/s and continuing to promote “dreaducation” to others interested in learning this craft on a professional and personal level. The course/s are hosted at www.valhallahair.com.au
