✨ LOCTICIAN SPOTLIGHT: Shelley -
Bam’s Dreads Threads and Wares ✨
Shelley is the passionate force behind
BAMS Dreads, Threads & Wares, based in Kalgoorlie in the red dirt of outback Western Australia.
A loctician, educator, mother, and maker, Shelley has built something truly special - a professional and welcoming space dedicated to the craft of dreadlocks and the people who wear them.
Her journey began in 2018, when she and her husband had just moved to Kalgoorlie with their young family.
With 2 boys still in nappies and both parents working rostered shifts in the mining industry, Shelley began using her “days off” to build something she felt was missing,
a professional dreadlock service that welcomed all hair types and approached the craft with care and skill using a gentle crochet technique.
At the time, quality training resources were limited, particularly around textured hair and multicultural dreadlock work, so Shelley did what many true craftspeople do. .. she learned, adapted, and grew through experience, working closely with her clients while continually expanding her knowledge and sharing that growth
with the wider lokk community.
Over the years that passion has evolved into a registered salon, a certified service, and a deeply personal space built on inclusivity, ethics, and respect for the craft.
All while balancing family life, collaborating with others in the hair industry, and nurturing a business that continues to evolve into its next chapter.
Shelley’s dedication to education and professional standards is evident in her impressive list of qualifications and ongoing training:
Qualifications & Experience
• Certified in Natural Crochet Dreadlocking
• Certified PRO LOKKTICIAN & Trainer with DreadSchool
• Registered Hair Salon
• Trainer of 2 dreadlock artists (including her husband Ben!)
• Certified in The Professional Temporary Dreadlock Course by Saltydreads & Dreadshop
• Ongoing collaborations with salons, stylists, and locticians across Australia
• Strong focus on multicultural and inclusive dreadlock services
What truly stands out about Shelley is her depth of knowledge across a wide variety of hair types and textures. Her ability to understand and work respectfully with different hair structures makes her an incredibly valuable practitioner within the Australian dreadlock community.
Her work extends beyond simply creating or maintaining dreadlocks- it’s about supporting people on their journey, building confidence, and creating a space where clients feel understood and cared for.
As Shelley says herself:
“Not just a hairstyle, but a lifestyle.”
